Volunteering

The Law Centre's volunteer scheme offers two roles for those candidates wishing to gain experience within a busy community advice centre:

 

Description of role

Qualifying criteria

Administrative and Reception volunteer

The role of the Admin & Reception volunteer is primarily to assist the Administrative group as first point of contact to clients and visitors to the Law Centre and to provide a welcoming and efficient service to clients. The Admin & Reception volunteer would also generally assist other Law Centre workers with administrative tasks.

Those wishing to gain office experience, preferably with some experience already of dealing with members of the public in a busy setting; those returing to work.

Legal volunteer

This placement creates an ideal opportunity for gaining legal experience in a busy community Law Centre whilst also developing existing skills.

Working under the direct supervision of a Caseworker, the role of the legal volunteer is to provide assistance to Caseworkers, who will provide you with a work plan. You will also receive support and ongoing supervision from the General Office Supervisor. There may be occasions where you are required to provide administrative support at Reception or for the Administration group. This will be agreed between your Casework Supervisor and the General Office Supervisor.

Candidates should normally be Law graduates and working their way towards qualification eg. undertaking the Legal Practice Course, Bar Vocational Course or equivalent

Finance Volunteer

This role is suitable for those that already have some knowledge of accounting practices and accountancy packages such as QuickBooks.

You will be assisting the Finance & Monitoring Supervisor with tasks such as preparing draft accounts, producing and monitoring budgets, liaising with statutory bodies and reporting outcomes and outputs, keeping client account records in compliance with the Solicitors Accounts Rules, dealing with the Legal Aid scheme

A recently retired finance worker or manager or one that is in-between jobs.

You should be highly numerate preferably with experience of overseeing budgets.
