Housing advice

The Law Centre helps and advises tenants with matters involving homelessness, possession proceedings, rent arrears, domestic violence, racial harassment and discrimination, transfers and waiting list applications. We also advise on security of tenure and disrepair matters.

We take part in the weekly duty scheme at Bow County Court advising residents from Tower Hamlets, Newham and Waltham Forest.

Please note that we do not advise landlords or those accused of being perpetrators of domestic violence (due to conflict of interest considerations) and unfortunately do not have the resources to provide advice to leaseholders.

Appointments

We offer daytime appointments for advice in the above areas.

Monthly drop in session

There is also a drop-in session on the last Monday of every month if your problem is regarding one of the following issues ONLY:

• Allocations
• Lettings problems
• Overcrowding
• Medical health and your housing
• Assignments of tenancy
• General advice

The sessions are first-come, first-served and we are only able to advise the first 10 people. If you are a private tenant needing housing advice, please speak with the receptionist first.

Evening sessions

Housing advice sessions are held fortnightly on a Monday evening from 6.30pm. This is on a strictly first come-first served basis and you are advised to arrive on time as the session can be very busy. You should contact our reception on 020 7247 8998 for the date of the next evening advice session for Housing. These details are also displayed on the front windows of the Law Centre premises.

Youth homelessness project

The project provides legal advice for young people aged 16-25 in 24 North, East and South London boroughs. Many have been forced to leave home because of relationship breakdown, abuse or neglect. Many ‘sofa-surf’ at friends’ houses and some sleep on the streets. Some young people do obtain housing, but often in temporary, insecure and inappropriate accommodation, with no support. Many young people do not access fi nancial support and many have debts.

Law Centre caseworkers provide legal advice to young people including:

• Homeless applications
• Providing advice and guidance about renting in the private sector (when there are legal issues or as part of a homelessness application)
• Claiming benefits for young people who are homeless or at risk of homelessness
• Accessing support for their other legal problems through linking up with immigration solicitors, family solicitors etc.
• Rent arrears which threaten their homes
• Possession actions
• Accessing support from Social Services for example where there are child protection issues, young people leaving care, young disabled people and those who are too vulnerable to manage on their own, and young people with immigration issues.
